ads.txt or app-ads.txt — which one do you need?
- ads.txt protects ad inventory on websites. It lives at the root of the site that shows the ads: https://example.com/ads.txt.
- app-ads.txt protects ad inventory in mobile and CTV apps. It lives at the root of the developer website from the app’s store listing: https://example.com/app-ads.txt.
- If you monetize both a website and apps on the same domain, you publish both files — the lines are often the same.
The line format
google.com, pub-0000000000000000, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0 example-ssp.com, 12345, RESELLER
Every line has the ad system’s domain, your account ID in that system, the relationship (DIRECT — you own the account, RESELLER — a partner sells on your behalf) and, optionally, the certification authority ID (TAG-ID) of the ad system. Lines starting with # are comments.
Why use a generator
- Network templates are kept current — partner lists change several times a year.
- Your publisher ID is written into every line that needs it.
- Duplicates between networks are removed; a copy with a certification ID wins over one without.
- Variables (OWNERDOMAIN, MANAGERDOMAIN, CONTACT) go to the top of the file.
For apps, the generated file can also be hosted for free with a permanent link.
FAQ
Is ads.txt the same as app-ads.txt?
The format is identical (IAB Tech Lab). The difference is where the file lives and what it protects: ads.txt sits on the website that shows ads, app-ads.txt on the developer website of the apps.
Can I use the same lines for ads.txt and app-ads.txt?
Often yes, but check with each network: some use different account IDs or partner lists for web and for apps.
